You Can Be A Doctor:
Application Guide
What if you don't meet the entry requirements?
The first thing you should do is look at widening access grade adjustments or contextual admissions, as outlined in our ‘Subjects and Grades’ page. Entry requirements are lowered for those who fulfill certain criteria and you may qualify for such adjustments without realising!
Our ‘Alternative Routes into Medicine’ page goes over all other non-traditional avenues into medicine. Additional years of study can be a daunting thought, but these are becoming more and more popular as medicine is an exceedingly competitive degree. Coming into medicine as a graduate or mature student often means you will have increased confidence and life experience. Those of us who went down this route felt more prepared entering clinical placement years than we would have as school leavers, for example.
What if I don't get in first time?
-
Seek feedback on your application and analyse which areas require improvement - being able to reflect is a huge step towards building a stronger application next time around.
-
Fill your year out with work/work experience, volunteering and productive hobbies that you can discuss in your next application - admissions staff will be looking for applicants who remain driven and passionate about medicine in the year/s between applications.
-
Be your own cheerleader - you may be deterred from re-applying by those around you, but the choice is yours! There is no shame in trying again.
